Mouthpieces: more evidence, more fitting.
Jaw-advancing mouthpieces hold the lower jaw slightly forward while you sleep. Among snoring options, they have the strongest professional backing, and real trade-offs.
Three kinds
- Dentist-made and adjustable. Moulded to your teeth and adjusted over several visits.
- Mouldable at home (“boil and bite”). Softened in hot water and shaped by biting. Cheaper, and less tailored.
- Tongue-retaining devices. Hold the tongue forward by suction instead of moving the jaw.
What the guidelines say
US sleep medicine and dental sleep medicine societies recommend oral appliances for adults with primary snoring who want treatment, after a sleep physician has assessed them. That assessment matters because snoring can hide sleep apnoea. For people with sleep apnoea, the same guideline prefers custom, adjustable devices over mouldable ones.
One recent trial, as an example
A 2024 pilot trial compared a dentist-made adjustable device (ProSomnus EVO) with a bundle of simpler measures: nasal strips, a nasal spray, mouth tape and a side-sleeping pillow. After four weeks, 91% of partners rated the snoring much better with the device, against 58% with the bundle. About 45% had temporary jaw discomfort. The ratings were the partners’ impressions, only 42 couples finished, and the paper notes these devices can cost up to USD 3,000. It tested one device, not mouthpieces in general.
Jaw or tooth discomfort, a changed bite and excess saliva are common early on. Most makers exclude dentures, loose teeth, gum disease and jaw-joint problems. Regular dental checks are part of using one.
Mouldable mouthpieces
They’re cheaper, but evidence for specific models is thin. Germany’s independent consumer test of 23 snoring products found none that reliably stopped snoring, and advised seeing a dentist or ENT doctor first. Two mouldable models we’re still checking.
Tongue-retaining devices
The main study behind one popular brand, Good Morning Snore Solution, was run by its inventor, in people with sleep-disordered breathing rather than simple snoring. We haven’t added a profile.
Before buying one
Get assessed first, and ask a dentist whether your teeth and jaw suit a mouthpiece.

Read in full. Recommends oral appliances for adults with primary snoring who want treatment, after a sleep physician has assessed them. Prefers custom, adjustable devices for people with sleep apnoea (based on low-quality evidence).
- Custom oral appliance vs conservative treatment for snoring: pilot randomised trial (JAMA Otolaryngology, 2024) ↗
Read. 50 couples randomised, 42 finished; adults who snore without sleep apnoea. Four weeks. Outcome was the bed partner’s rating, not a recording. Analysed only those who finished.
- Mittel gegen Schnarchen: 23 Produkte im Test (Stiftung Warentest, 2021) ↗
German independent consumer test, October 2021. None of 23 products reliably stopped snoring; it advises seeing a dentist or ENT doctor first. Individual product ratings are behind a paywall and were not read.

Abstract read. Participants had sleep-disordered breathing, not simple snoring. The first author developed the device later sold as Good Morning Snore Solution. Sample size is not shown in the abstract.
